KPMG Football Benchmark: Net financial debt of Barcelona and Real Madrid in 2020/21

A comparison of the net financial debt of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid C.F. – focusing only on the interest bearing loans and borrowings, net of the available cash. The Blaugrana’s debt situation has been on the spotlight over the past months and it has been one of the main reason for the departure of Leonel Messi.

As of 30th June 2021, they registered a total exposure towards banks and other financial institutions of EUR 532.m (EUR 472.2m, net of cash). For both the Spanish giants the renovation of their iconic stadia, Camp Nou and Santiago Bernabéu, has a relevant weight in their financial exposure. In particular, Real Madrid’s balance sheet includes a long-term loan of EUR 375m related to the stadium project.
